The first store, which opened on a corner in Cape town, was mainly focused on providing general merchandise to the military and fishermen in the area. His son, Arthur J. Krawitz, expanded this offering to provide South Africans with winter and summer clothing for their international travels. In 1970, Philip J. Krawitz, son of Arthur J. Krawitz and the current Executive Chairman of the Board, brought in multiple new clothing brands and also opened more stores. The company is sticking with their family business traditions, with the fourth generation – daughters, Martine and Amanda - continuing to build the business with the Cape Union Mart vision in mind. They not only have a loyal customer base, but seem to have loyal employees too. They employ more than 2000 people, and many have been with them for more than a decade.

Today, they have more than 300 stores across South Africa, in cities such as Claremont, Richards Bay, Cape Town, Knysna, Stellenbosch and Vredenburg.
