In 1995, entrepreneurs Ryan and Glen Broomberg, opened a store in Johannesburg called The R10 Store. Soon after, they opened another one in Parow, Western Cape. The Melbro group, a company with more than 100 years’ experience in wholesale, saw their potential and acquired 50% in shares. The company expanded rapidly, and by the end of 1996, they already had more than 40 stores. At that time, the South African Rand was relatively strong, making it possible for the store to offer various products at a value less than R10. Unfortunately, the Rand could not keep its stronghold, so by 1997, it was too weak to keep offering products at this low amount. It is at this point that The R10 Store became The Crazy Store, whilst Melbro also gained 100% control of the company. In 2004, they celebrated the opening of their 100th store, and two years later, they even opened their first store outside South African borders, in Windhoek, Namibia. By 2011, they had 200 stores, and only six years later, they opened their 300th store. Today they have hundreds of stores across South Africa, in cities such as Cape Town, Claremont, Mossel Bay, Kimberley, Secunda and Heidelberg.
