The first Baby City store opened in 1992, in Durban. But the concept behind the store was already born more than ten years prior. In 1975, Albert Aronoff and his family arrived in Durban – almost penniless and barely able to speak English. In order to survive, he helped his sister in her small baby clothing store called Fairy Tales. Within three months, he and his wife opened their own Fairy Tales store, with their two children, Michel and Alice, helping them out regularly. As the business expanded, so did Michel’s experience and education. By now he was a chartered accountant, and he soon realized the potential of the store in the midst of the ever-changing urban market. This inspired the family to open the first hyper store called Baby City. After decades of business and ever-growing stores, Baby City still remains a family business and today, they have more than 30 stores across South Africa, in cities such as Polokwane, Retreat, Berea and Mbombela.
