SPAR stores were founded more than 90 years ago in the Netherlands by Adriaan van Well. Today they have more than 13 000 stores in over 40 countries. In 1963, the first SPAR store was established in South Africa, and today there are numerous divisions of the SPAR group, namely SPAR (general shopping), SPAR Express (situated conveniently next to selected Shell petrol stations), KWIKSPAR (for everyday convenience), and SUPERSPAR (largest division of the SPAR group). SUPERSPAR is the South African equivalent of EUROSPAR. It’s the largest store of the SPAR group, usually more than 1 300 m2. 

SPAR also has other divisions to offer their customers more convenience: Build It supplies hardware and general DIY products at affordable prices; TOPS at SPAR are conveniently located at selected SPAR stores, offering liquor; SaveMor is a smaller grocery outlet, located in rural areas. There is a SUPERSPAR in most metropolitan areas, and you will find one in cities such as Mthatha, Durban, Johannesburg, Nelspruit, Pietermaritzburg and Rustenburg.

SPAR stores fall under the Groceries category along with other stores such as Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, Spar, Ultra Liquors, Food Lover's Market, Makro, Boxer, Cambridge Foods and Woolworths. Their trading hours differ from one store to another, but most stores are open 8h00 to 20h00 from Monday to Sunday (including public holidays).
