About Boxer Superstores

Boxer Superstores was established in April 1977, originally under the name KwaZulu Cash & Carry. Starting as a conventional wholesaler, they traded in basic grocery supplies such as maize meal, samp, rice, and beans. In 1988, the company was bought by a group of investors, and after opening several branches across KwaZulu-Natal, the store name was officially changed to ‘Boxer Cash & Carry’ in 1991.  In 1997, after expanding into other provinces of South Africa (Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga), they established their retail identity, by making a final name change to ‘Boxer Superstores’. In 2002, retail giant Pick ‘n Pay took over Boxer Superstores, and with this came the new opportunity to target middle to lower-income buyers.

In 2004, a new hardware division was added in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, with a modified logo and the name ‘Boxer Build’. In an ongoing effort to build trust in their community, their hardware stores also cater for the budget-conscious customer. Two years later, in 2009, they opened yet another division, called ‘Boxer Liquors’, with stores all across South Africa.

A significant year for the company was 2015, when they opened their first store in the Western Cape, which also happened to be their 200th trading store. They celebrated their 40th birthday in 2017 as “Africa’s Favourite Discount Supermarket”. With a continued focus to fill the gap, they launched Boxer Super Meats in 2019, providing customers with high-quality fresh and frozen meats.

Boxer Superstores believe in giving back to the communities that support their growth.  They regularly make contributions to community schools, renovate paediatric wards, and supply food parcels to various non-profit organisations. They support local, small-scale farmers, by reselling their fresh produce in stores and often donate supplies and equipment for farming. They also respect those who keep the community safe, by offering a free cup of coffee to officers on duty. You can read more about their community involvement here.

With more than 250 stores across the country, Boxer Superstores offer a complete shopping experience for their customers. Today, their stores are found all over South Africa in Empangeni, Pietermaritzburg, Vryheid, Mokopane, Johannesburg and East London. They continue to provide a wide variety of quality products at affordable prices. They strongly believe in building a better community and still stand behind their philosophy, saying customers should ‘Never Pay More Than the Boxer Price.’

Boxer Superstores fall under the Groceries category along with other stores such as 1UP Cash & Carry, Big Save, Bluff Meat Supply, Cambridge Foods, Check Save, Check Star, Checkers, Devland, Diamond Discount Liquors and Food Lover's Market. Their trading hours are from 8h00 to 17h00 from Monday to Friday and 8h00 to 13h00 on Saturdays.

What Boxer Superstores Offer

In any Boxer Superstore, you can expect a wide array of products on sale for your household and grocery needs. Their aim is to provide quality products and services to their customers, all ‘under one roof’:

  • At any store, you can withdraw money, make account payments, or play LOTTO, either at the till or the Money Kiosk.
  • Their dedication to support small-scale farmers, means you can expect most of the fresh fruits and vegetables to be locally sourced.
  • Visit their in-store bakery and pick out freshly baked bread, along with other baked goods such as cakes and doughnuts.
  • Their hot foods deli offers a choice of snacks and freshly cooked meals.

Boxer Super Meats provide a wide selection of fresh and frozen meats, ranging from chicken livers to stewing beef. Occasionally, customers can benefit from a Shisa Nyama, having meat they purchased, prepared and cooked for them. Because they are located close to commuter hubs, customers can easily purchase their meat while on the go. There is also a hot foods counter, where hungry visitors have a choice of three different russian sausage preparations.

Boxer Liquors provide both the individual customer and local taverns with a range of alcoholic beverages at competitive prices. Their regular liquor specials attract a large number of customers to their retail outlets.

Boxer Build is the hardware division which caters for the budget-conscious customer. Not only do they have competitively priced supplies, but they also offer a Lay-Bye option, making it possible for customers to deposit money into an account until the purchases are paid in full. They can also arrange easy delivery when buying supplies in bulk.

You can find all the Boxer specials in their latest catalogue Boxer - Specials.
