The concept behind Teljoy all started in 1969. It was a big year for the world. The first man walked on the moon, Woodstock attracted thousands of festival goers, and major shows like The Brady Bunch and Sesame Street made its debut on television (TV). But none of this could be watched by South Africans, as TV was not available in the country at that time. It’s during this time that Theo Rutstein got the idea to make this novel electronic appliance available to many. He launched Teljoy South Africa in the middle of 1969, and offered households the opportunity to book a television set for rent as soon as it became available in South Africa. It would still take a few years, but eventually, Rutstein installed the first television set in the end of 1974. Teljoy was thus the first company to bring television to South Africa on a commercial level!
