In their slogan, Shoprite promises “Lower Prices You Can Trust Always”. They seem to deliver on this promise, and for the past 40 years have been providing customers with an assortment of household food and items at very low prices.
Shoprite is Africa’s largest food retailer, a title they are immensely proud of. With more than 500 stores all over South Africa, they supply 22 million shoppers with affordable groceries every day.
Shoprite has a strong focus on job creation. When the economy is under threat, they work hard to prevent employees from losing their job. So far, they have created jobs for more than 130 000 individuals. To curb the high unemployment rate in South Africa, they provide bursaries to students studying towards a scarce skill. In 2019, this funding amounted to R17 million. Not only do students get up to R70 000 for their study fees, but they also sign a work-back contract with Shoprite. This means once they graduate, they already have employment.
They also believe in looking after the community and regularly provide food subsidies for those in need. Non-profit organizations can register for an Act for Change card, which provides them with a 5% discount on their purchases at any Shoprite Holdings store (this includes Shoprite, Checkers, Checkers Hyper, USave, OK Furniture and House & Home)
In 2013 and 2014, they won several awards namely Nr.1 Food Retailer, Nr.1 Toy Retailer, Nr.1 Grocery Retailer, and South Africa’s Nr.1 Supermarket. Their proudest achievement, however, is the low price promise that they are able to provide their customers for the past 40 years.
Shoprite also rewards their customers for being more environmentally conscious. At the till, customers can opt for a 100% recyclable shopping bag for R3, and even get 50c off their purchase every time they reuse their bag.
Today, they have stores all over South Africa in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, Paarl, East London and Randfontein. Shoprite falls under the Groceries category along with other stores such as 1UP Cash & Carry, Big Save, Bluff Meat Supply, Boxer, Cambridge Foods, Check Save, Check Star, Checkers, Devland and Diamond Discount Liquors. Their stores have different trading hours, but most are open from 9h00 to 18h00 (Monday to Thursday), 9h00 to 19h00 (Friday), 9h00 to 17h00 (Saturday), and 9h00 to 14h00 (Sunday).
