The Foschini Group (TFG) was established by George Ivan Rosenthal in 1924. He wanted to bring American-style fashion garments to South Africans, making them more affordable and accessible. With Johannesburg having the best shopping areas and most available leasing space, he decided it was the right place for a Foschini store. It was there in Pritchard street, on 27 November 1925, where the first store opened. Within two years, the brand grew to nine additional branches and in 1941, Rosenthal even registered Foschini Dresses (Pty) on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, making it the first clothing retailer with this accomplishment!

Today, The Foschini Group has more than 3000 stores across South Africa, in cities such as East London, Polokwane, Benoni, Pietermaritzburg, Pretoria and Cape Town.
